IN ACT AND THOUGHT

Enveloping performative testimony within an intricate machinery of shifting curtains, the piece In Act and Thought, created in collaboration with the members of The Forsythe Company by choreographer Fabrice Mazliah, recomposes the working knowledge of the performers.  Their actions are tangled with thoughts, but certainly not replaced by them. In the piece, the performers explore how to combine movement with language: becoming precise, expanding details into complex explanations, being in agreement with others, starting ideas together, and also being poetic. Actions elicit further actions. Reports recombine, forming changing acoustic textures. Within this nesting of movement and language, a communal process of articulation is sought. Free from conventional notions of knowledge as facts, categories, and measures, it becomes another format of a piece: still performance and far from school.
